About the WiMAX Forum Application

Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is a broadband wireless access technology defined by IEEE 802.16. A WiMAX network consists of several logical components with defined reference points between the components.  Any exposed reference points between the components are defined by WiMAX Forum standards.

Definitions

Base Station (BS)

The WiMAX Base Station (BS) is a logical entity that represents an instance of the WiMAX MAC and PHY. It supports scheduler functions for uplink and downlink resources. Supports connectivity of a single BS to more than one ASN-GW for load balancing or redundancy purposes.

ASN Gateway (ASN-GW)

ASN Gateway represents an aggregation of Control Plane functional entities that are either paired with a corresponding function in the ASN (e.g. BS instance), a resident function in the CSN or a function in another ASN. The ASN-GW also perform s Bearer Plane routing or bridging function.

The ASN-GW implementation includes redundancy and load-balancing among multiple ASN-GWs. For every MS, a BS is associated with exactly one default ASN GW. However, ASN-GW functions for every MS may be distributed among multiple ASN-GWs located in one or more ASN(s).
