The gNB-CU initiates the procedure by sending a GNB-CU CONFIGURATION UPDATE message including the appropriate updated configuration data to the gNB-DU. The gNB-DU responds with a GNB-CU CONFIGURATION UPDATE ACKNOWLEDGE message to acknowledge that it successfully updated the configuration data. The procedure is between gNB-CU and gNB-DU over the F1ap interface. The below flow shows the Cell Activation procedure which is used to report Service status of the activated cells.

Cell modification/deactivation/barring will be done after the a cell activation procedure. This cell activation procedure can be with or without gnbConfigUpdate option, here is an example of the messages included when Cell is deactivated after cell activation is done via gnbConfigUpdate.

Cell deactivation: Cell activation done first through F1SetupRsp.

Limitation / Caveat

  • Cell Activation - All cells activated.
  • Cell Modification - All activated cells are modified with SIB info.
  • Cell Deactivation/Barring - at least 2 cells have to be configured. The last cell is deactivated/barred.
